May 20, 2025

The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music presented the 2nd Move on Up Gospel Sing-Off and Celebration at Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University on Saturday, May 10th. The theatre was filled with song and a few hundred people to share in the excitement of this program which celebrates gospel music and those who continue to share this important music genre. Five choirs (St. Stephen AMEZ, Praise Ground Choir, Rebirth Praise Team, Count Basie Center Gospel Choir and Lawrence High School Gospel Choir) from all over the state of New Jersey performed for awards of $5,000 and $10,000 to support their choirs. The audience was also treated to a performance from last year’s awardee, Dale Ciceron & the Psalms of Praise. Pastor Ciceron had the audience on their feet when he invited all of the choirs to the stage to perform with him. Alexander Simone, grandson of the legendary Nina Simone served as the program Emcee and had the attendees chanting “Move on Up!” throughout the event. Count Basie Center Gospel Choir was awarded $5,000 with the top award of $10,000 going to Lawrence High School Gospel Choir who will utilize the funds to support their gospel program needs.
